Installing Backup Exec 2010 R3 Service Pack 1 (SP1) from Live Update fails reporting the error "LU1812: A program that was part of this update failed when it ran.",  When applying SP1 manually the install fails with an error "No valid source could be found".

Error Message

Error “LU1812: A program that was part of this update failed when it ran. This update was not applied.”

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Symantec Backup Exec. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

Windows MSI or WIndows installer needs original Backup Exec file versions in case the Service Pack or hotfix is uninstalled.  These files are stored and cached.  The original files are located on the Backup Exec DVD in the  "Backup Exec for Windows Servers.msi" .  If the Windows Installer can't find the source media in it's original spot then Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP1 will fail to install.

1) Apply Backup Exec 2010 R3 Hotfix 171073 (000014145).

NOTE: This hotfix is not dependent on any other hotfix or service pack.

If Hotfix 171073 is applied manually you can install Backup Exec 2010 R3 Service Pack 1 using Live Update or manual download.

For manual download of SP1:

Download the executable file and then Run it with Admin privileges.

If Live Update is used to install Hotfix 171073 the Live Update list may show Service Pack 1 and Hotfix 171073 as available updates to to install.  Select all available updates.

If all updates are selected Service Pack 1 may still fail to install but Hotfix 171073  should report a successful installation.  Re-run Live Update and Service Pack 1 should be in the list of available updates and successfully install once Live Update is executed again.

2)  Copy the "Backup Exec for Windows Servers.msi" to the cached media location.

Example:  For a 64-bit Media server  Copy "Backup Exec for Windows Servers.msi" from Backup Exec DVD 64-bit install folder to  "C:\Documents and Settings\Users\All Users\veritas\Backup Exec\{06B4D29D-D713-4EF3-B399-C4346FB84FF3}\Media" location.

The Backup Exec for Windows Servers.msi" files can be found on the Backup Exec 2010 R3 Install DVD at the following locations:

For 32 bit Media Servers - X:\BE\WinNT\Install\BE32\Install\Media
For 64 bit Media Servers - X:\BE\WinNT\Install\BEx64\Install\Media

Keep the ISO or extracted media for Backup Exec mounted or available. Once the file has been copied run the Live Update again to install the Service Pack 1.

3) This error may also appear when the original installation files are not available. When running the install of Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP1, the setup program looks in the Windows registry for the original install location and will generate the error if the setup files have been moved, deleted, or are unavailable.

a) Click Start | Run  Type regedit and click OK

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to the Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
