Problem

Backup of a virtual machine fails on Hyper V fails with the mentioned error when Hyper V is clustered.

Error Message

Backup Job Log shows:-

Completed status: Failed

Final error: 0xe0008516 - Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
Final error category: System Errors

Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
 
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
 
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
 
 

Cause

This issue occurs if:

Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems (RAWS) is not installed on a guest virtual machine and Granualar Recovery Technology(GRT) options  is selected in the backup job properties.

OR

Credentials used for backup job are invalid or do not have permission.

 

Solution

 

1. Make sure RAWS is installed on the guest virtual machine.

2. Use correct credentials for the backup job.
