Upgrading to Backup Exec 2010 from Backup Exec 11d; you receive message 'Unable to open the physical file X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data\BEDB_Log.ldf'

Problem

While performing an upgrade of Backup Exec (BE) 11d to BE 2010: The upgrade fails with the errors:

V-225-229: Unable to connect to SQL Server" occurs during the installation of Backup Exec for Windows Servers
V-225-205: ERROR: Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data\BEDB_Log.ldf


 

Error Message

V-225-229: Unable to connect to SQL Server" occurs during the installation of Backup Exec for Windows Servers
V-225-205: ERROR: Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data\BEDB_Log.ldf

Cause

In some instances of Backup Exec 11d, the log file is named as 'BEDB_log_dat.ldf' and the upgrade is only set to look for 'BEDB_log.ldf'

Solution

1- Stop all BE services

2- Detach BEDB SQL database using command line:

    a. Stop all the Backup Exec services
    b. Open a command line window and connect to the Microsoft SQL Server instance
    c. To connect to the Backup Exec instance of SQL Express, type:
 
               osql -E -S server name\BKUPEXEC
 
          If successfully connected to the server, the following prompt appears:
 
               1>
 
          To detach the Backup Exec database, type the following command at the OSQL prompt:
 
              1>EXEC sp_detach_db BEDB
 
              2>Go
 
 
3.  Leave the command window open and in an explorer window navigate to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data
             Find 'BEDB_log_dat.ldf'  and rename the file to 'BEDB_log.ldf'

 
4.  Re-attach the database, back in the open command window type the following at the OSQL
 
             1>EXEC sp_attach_db BEDB,
 
             2>N'C:\Program files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data\BEDB_dat.mdf',
 
             3>N'C:\Program files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data\BEDB_log.ldf'
 
             4>Go

5.  Rerun BE2010 Upgrade
