Problem

When creating the selection list for a backup job with the Backup Exec Agent for VMWare Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) by default only the complete virtual machine (VM) is selectable.

However there is the possibility via the "Include/Exclude" button to exclude an individual vmdk file from a VM selection list.

Solution

Veritas strongly advises against excluding individual vmdk files in a GRT (Granular Restore Technology) enabled backup job with the Backup Exec Agent for VMWare Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI).

Excluding an individual vmdk will have a negative impact on the complete GRT functionality.

If a vmdk file is excluded then Veritas can only support a redirect restore of the remaining vmdk's to the file system. These vmdk's then need to be imported later via a 3rd party tool.

If it is still required not to backup all vmdk's of a VM then Veritas recommends to backup this particular VM like a remote server via the Backup Exec Remote Agent running inside the VM.
