Manually Entered media descriptions applied to VTL media is removed by Backup Jobs


If a piece of media owned by a VTL is given a manually set Media Description, then after running an overwrite backup job to that same media the Description field is empty. Performing a similar operation to media held in a physical tape library maintains the media description.


The described problem against VTL is by design. The behaviour where tape media maintains the description is the incorrect operation.


Currently Symantec intends to ensure that the media descriptions are removed consistently across all media during an overwrite operation in the next major version of Backup Exec. However, in the next major version, a configuration change will also be provided that allows all media types to maintain the description during overwrites. Details of the method to change the configuration will be made available after the version of Backup Exec that supports the changes is released.

Symantec Corporation has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue is present in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Symantec Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers. 
There are no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the current or previous versions of the software at the present time. However, the issue is currently scheduled to be addressed in the next major revision of the product.
