Differential or Incremental VMWare backup runs as a full or fails with 0xe00095b4

Problem

Although the full VMware backup job completes successfully, the related  Differential or Incremental backup job fails reporting the error "Incremental/Differential backup methods are not supported for this VM" or the job will complete but run as a full backup. The exact symptom depends on the setting for "Use the full backup method for virtual machines that do not support incremental or differential backups", .

 

Error Message

0xe00095b4 - Incremental/Differential backup methods are not supported for this VM. The backup job failed, since the option 'fall back to a full backup' was not selected.

Cause

This condition is caused by having remote agent selections in the same backup selection list as VMware virtual machine selections and having these remote agent selections listed before the VMware selections.

Solution

Workaround:

To workaround this issue either change the selection list order to that the virtual machine resources are listed first, or run your VMWare selections using separate policies and selection lists from your remote agent selections.
