Hyper-V or AVVI GRT restores from duplicated set on tape fails with '0xe0000f0c - An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for job' when software encryption is enabled

Problem

Unable to perform Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) restores from a duplicated set on tape when the duplicate job has software encryption enabled. This only occurs when the following are true:

  1. Any / All duplicate GRT enabled backup sets with Software Encryption
  2. The backup was done using the Microsoft Hyper-V agent or the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI)

Error Message

An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for job.

Final error: 0xe0000f0c - An error occurred when attempting to initialize
encryption for job.
Final error category: Job Errors

An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for job.
V-79-57344-3852 - An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for
job.

V-79-57344-3852 - An error occurred when attempting to initialize encryption for job.
Connection to the restore target has been lost.  Operation canceled.

Solution

The current workaround is to re-duplicate the set on tape back to disk and then attach the VHD file (found in the IMG folder following the duplicate-to-disk job) using Windows Disk Management. The required data can then be copied from this volume.
