Backup of vCenter server within the same job that also has Virtual Machines (VM's) using the AVVI agent may fail with error 0xe000846b

Problem

When attempting to backup resources (File System, System State, Shadow Copy, etc) on the vCenter server, within the same job that backs up VM's via the AVVI agent, the backup may fail with the following errors.

 

Error Message

Final error: 0xe000846b - The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.  If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.
Final error category: Resource Errors

Backup
Unable to attach to \\SERVERNAME\Shadow?Copy?Components.
The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
 

Unable to attach to \\SERVERNAME\System?State.
The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.

Solution

There are multiple workarounds for this issue.

  1. Separate the backup of the vCenter server and the Virtual Machines.
  2. Backup the vCenter server via a different name type than the connection to vCenter to backup the Virtual Machines. (i.e. if the connection to vCenter to backup the VM's is done by FQDN, backup the vCenter server itself by it's Netbios Name)
