Error EBAB03F1: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error causing backup to fail.

Problem

Backup job is consuming 100% CPU usage and failing with the following:
Error EBAB03F1: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error causing backup to fail.

Error Message

Error EX8F17B7 : Cannot create recovery points for job: OFFSITE- Virtual.
Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file.
Error EBAB03F1: the Device is not connected.

Error E7D10046: Unable to set file size

Cause

Suspected this is caused by a failing disk as indicated by Windows event viewer log messages.
