Restore of SQL data from a differential backup fails with - Unable to restore differential backup because the database has not been restored to its previous state correct.

Problem

Differential jobs are matched to a full backup.  The most recent full backup taken just prior to the differential must be restored prior to restoring a differential.

Error Message

V-79-65323-3136 - Unable to restore differential backup because the database has not been restored to its previous state correct.

Cause

  • Failed jobs that occurred after the full but prior to the differential may cause the corruption in the catalog chain and render the last differential unusable.
  • Another possible cause is using another backup program to backup SQL.  If SQL is backed up internally or with a third party after the full but prior to the differential or incremental, this error can occur.

Solution

Use only Backup Exec to take backups of SQL if differentials or incrementals are used.

Start with a new full Backup Exec operation if any job ends with an error to ensure the integrity of the catalog chain.
