Problem

Redirected restore of a Virtual Machine to a ESX Server fails with the following error:

Error Message

Final error: 0xe0009585 - "Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine".

Connection to the restore target has been lost. Operation canceled.

or

v-79-57344-41996 - Could not open the disk on the target server.

Cause

This can can occur because of the following reasons:

1. Unable to ping to ESX Server by Name

2. The Virtual Machine was backed up with an ISO mounted to that VM & the ESX server datastore where we are restoring doesn't have the ISO folder

VMware Debug Logs show the following:

[2432] 01/14/11 22:42:27 VDDK-Warn: [NFC ERROR] NfcNewAuthdConnectionEx: Failed to connect to peer. Error: Host address lookup for server jps-esx-02 failed: No such host is known

Solution

1. Add host entries on the Backup Server for the ESX Server

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Example:

10.10.0.24           ESX Server Name

2. Create the same folder on the Datastore where the ISO was mounted when the Virtual Machine was backed up

3. Run the restore job.
