Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers fails to install/uninstall with the error message: "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid"

When attempting to install or uninstall the remote agent it gives the following message: "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid" (Figure 1)

The bkupinst.htm displays the following error for Remote Agent installation:
Windows Installer return code: 1603
10-04-2010,12:11:01:  A fatal error occurred during installation on server




Previous versions of Remote Agent that may be installed on the server can cause problems in updating the registry keys with the new installation or updating an existing Remote Agent.


Perform the following steps to manually uninstall the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers: 

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

1. Launch the registry editor (Start>Run>REGEDT32) and remove the keys below if they are present:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\Agent Accelerator for Windows NT/2000



HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Remote Agent for Windows Servers


Note: For Windows 2000 Systems, the following additional registry key also needs to be deleted if the Backup Exec 8.x. Remote Agent was ever installed.  Otherwise, an entry may remain in Add/Remove Programs and the Remote Agent for Windows Servers may not re-install properly.


2. Delete the following folders if they exist from the remote machine via Windows Explorer:



C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\RANT


C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\RAWS

3. Empty the Recycle Bin.

4. Reboot the remote machine prior to attempting a re-install of the Remote Agent for Windows Servers. For manual installation of remote agent, refer to the related articles.
