When backing up the active copy of an Exchange database with LCR enabled to a tape device the job fails with "VFF Open Failure"

Problem

When attempting to backup the Active copy of an Exchange database with LCR enabled to tape, the job will fail with Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options for the following reason: VFF Open Failure.  This can be caused by low memory or disk resources.

 

Error Message

Backup Job Log Shows: Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options for the following reason: VFF Open Failure.  This can be caused by low memory or disk resources.

beremote log on the Exchange server shows:

FAILED: The system cannot find the file specified.

Solution

Workaround:

Backup the passive node of the Exchange database with LCR enabled.

This issue is resolved by Backup Exec 2010 R2 Hotfix 143746
