GRT (Granular Recovery Technology) enabled backup to a Deduplication folder fails with Out of Memory error

Problem

During a GRT (Granular Recovery Technology) enabled backup of Exchange, VMWare or SharePoint to a Deduplication folder, the backup fails and reports an Out of Memory error.

V-79-57344-33858 - A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory.

V-79-57344-4611 - An error occurred creating or accessing the directory \\.pdvfs\Server_name\1\BEData specified for this operation. Ensure that the directory is accessible and can be written to.

Cause

This error is occurring during GRT backups of Exchange servers.  While the root cause of the problem has not yet been determined, the following have been seen to reduce the occurrences of the issue.

  1. Run a non GRT full backup of the Exchange server.  This keeps the backup process from mounting the image and encountering this issue.  The full backup also ensures that the transaction log files get backed up.  Subsequent backups then have fewer transaction logs which may be a factor in this issue.
  2. Reboot the media server.  If the PDVFSService.exe service crashes, it can cause problems during subsequent backups.  It requires a reboot of the system to clear out this condition.
