Problem

Backup Exec 2010 - Catalog Tools (CATTOOLS.EXE) Utility

Solution

Symantec Backup Exec (tm) 2010 now has a utility to export the contents of the Backup Exec Catalog file to a text file. This utility is the replacement for the Catalog Dump (CATDUMP.EXE) Utility that has been provided for previous versions of Backup Exec.

To use this utility:

1. Backup Exec 2010 must be installed*

2. CatTools.exe must be copied to the directory where Backup Exec is installed (Default C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec).

*Note: Even though Backup Exec 2010 is required to run this utility, catalogs from any previous version of Backup Exec can be exported.

Usage:

CatTools [OPTIONS]...

Where OPTIONS are defined as follows:

To convert BE File History file to XML or TEXT file:

   <-Convert | -C > <-FileName | -FN> <source file name> <-Type | -T> <XML | TEXT>

   [<-Output | -O> <output file name>]

Example:

Catalog directory: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs

Catalog file: {A018199C-8617-11D1-ABBE-0000-F832B476}.fh

Desired Output File: C:\Catalog.txt

The command would be:

cattools -C -FN "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs\{A018199C-8617-11D1-ABBE-0000-F832B476}.fh" -T TEXT -O C:\Catalog.txt

NOTES:
- The console may go into a non-responsive state while generating the text file. Process is complete when the C:\ prompt returns.
- The options and output format may have changed from those available in CATDUMP.EXE
