Problem

Backup of remote server using the Deduplication option ends with the following error: "Storage device "XXXX" reported an error on a request to write a media location identifier (file mark)"

Error Message

Storage device "XXXX" reported an error on a request to write a media location identifier (file mark)

V-79-57344-34036 - An unknown error has occurred.

Solution

  • Remote servers backed up using Backup Exec and the Deduplication option that are in a DMZ, may prove to be complicated.  This can be due to how the firewall is setup, use of VLANS or alternate networks and use of HOSTS files.  Care should be taken when configuring these with respect to various applications and how the servers on both end communicate to one another.  If using a VLAN, one should also include entries in the HOSTS files, to be sure to be able to use correct IP address.

  • This issue also seen while backing up a NDMP server to deduplication storage.

During the backup of the NDMP server to deduplication folder, the connection to the NDMP filer is lost (see sgmon log above). This abrupt break in connection and backup causes un-readable markers on deduplication device. To resolve such issues, must resolve NDMP server connection issues or reservation conflict.
