When restoring one or several virtual disks (vmdk) in a VMware Virtual Machine (VM) instead of entire VM, all vmdk in the VM are created and consume disk space

Problem

When restoring one or several virtual disks (vmdk) in a VMware VM instead of entire VM, all vmdk in the VM are created and consume disk space

Cause

Symantec does not support excluding a VMDK from the backup or restore.

Solution

Workaround:
To work around this issue, perform one of the following:
  1. Use the Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) option.  GRT can restore specific files and folders instead of entire virtual disk.
  2. Use the thin provisioning option with redirect restore.  The thin provisioning option can disable disk consumption of the disks unexpectedly created.
