Unable to restore Public Folder items when using replica Public Folders.

When using Public Folder archiving within a replicated Public Folder environment, a manual restore of an item within a Public Folder may never complete and the shortcut remains as "Pending Restore".

An example configuration could be similar to this:-

EXCH1 and EXCH2 (Replica)

EXCH1 hosts a public folder
EXCH2 is a PF replication server

EV01 manages the Archiving Task for EXCH1

Here is an example of the restore attempts:

  • An item is posted onto EXCH1
  • This item is then replicated to EXCH2
  • Archiving runs against EXCH1 turning items to shortcuts
  • Replication takes place, and the shortcut appears on EXCH2
  • Client attempts to restore an item from EXCH2
  • Item stays as Pending Restore


Note: Double clicking on the shortcut restores the item successfully.

Ensure that the Default public store set on the mailbox store for the user initiating the restore is the local server and not another Exchange server. 

In Exchange 2007 operating in a mixed Exchange environment it has been seen that this needed to be set to a 2003 Exchange server that the folder resided on.  The setting is listed on the Client Settings tab of the Mailbox Database Properties for the storage group in question under Server Configuration > Mailbox in the Exchange Management Console.

Once the Default public store is set properly the restore should be able to process completely.

There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the current or previous versions of the software at the present time. This issue may be resolved in a future major revision of the software at a later time. However, this particular issue is not currently scheduled for any release.
