Backup of SharePoint or MOSS 2007 databases fails with the error: 0xe0008492 - Database Query Failure

Problem

Backup of SharePoint or MOSS 2007 databases fails with the following error.

Error Message

V-79-57344-33938 - An error occurred on a query to database DATABASENAME.

V-79-57344-33938 - Cannot open backup device 'DATABASENAME'. Operating system error 0x80070002 (The system cannot find the file specified.).

During the backup of MOSS 2007 or SharePoint Services 3.0 databases, the backup fails with the above error message.

The event Logs on the SQL Server may show the following error messages:

Cause

This issue is pertaining to the Microsoft SQLVDI (Virtual Device Interface) used by Backup Exec to backup SQL databases.
 

Solution


This issue is resolved by applying the following update to the SQL Server from Microsoft.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components
  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en

Note: a reboot may be required after the update has been installed.
