Problem

Browsing single SQL instance fails with error "An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of Microsoft SQL Server."

 

Error Message

When attempting to expand the SQL instance(s) in the backup selection list, you receive the following error:  An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of Microsoft SQL Server. Microsoft SQL Server does not appear to be running or network connections are preventing access to it.


Beremote debug log from the Backup Exec or SQL server reveals the following:

[9140] Could not resolve the "bews-ndmp" or the "ndmp" service, error code: 10109, using port 10000
[9140] Could not create an IPv6 socket at this time, reason:An error occurred during a socket creation operation: Error Code: 10047, System Error Message: An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.

Cause

IPV6 is enabled on one of the two machines attempting to connect.

 

Solution

Disable IPV6 on the single machine, restart the Backup Exec services and select the SQL resources in the backup selection list

OR

Confirm both servers are capable of using IPV6 and enable IPV6 on the second machine.
