Problem

'Error when reading user preferences' is seen when clicking on the 'Manage Tasks' tab in Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution (BESR-MS).

Solution

 

Veritas Corporation has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue is present in earlier versions listed under the Product(s) Section of this article. Veritas Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers.
 

There are no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in earlier versions of the software at the present time.  However, the issue has been addressed in the revision of the product specified at the end of this article.

When clicking on the Manage Tasks tab within the Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution (BESR-MS) console, 'Error when reading user preferences' is seen (Figure 1).

The following is seen in the application event log at the same time:
 
 
This is typically seen when logged into the server using a different account to that used for the installation of BESR-MS.
 
Workaround:
 
In some cases, the following workaround has resolved this issue.
 
Manually add the user account in to the local security group of the BESR-MS server as well as the SQL server (if remote). Add the user into the following User Groups:
 
1) "Veritas Administrators" Group on the BESR MS 2010 server.
2) SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$<Server>$<instace> group in the SQL server.
