Some guest OS files on VMware vSphere (ESX 4.0) might not be restored even if restore job had completed without error.

Problem

Some guest OS files on VMware vSphere (ESX 4.0) might not be restored even if restore job had completed without error.

Solution

Some guest OS files on VMware vSphere (ESX 4.0) might not be restored even if restore job had completed without error.

This issue happens only if the following conditions are met:
  • The backup destination is a Backup-To-Disk device.
  • At least one Incremental or Differential backup was taken.
  • The backup was taken from a Virtual Machine of VMware  vSphere (ESX 4.0) environment.

NOTE: This issue is still being under investigation.  This conditions may be changed.

Cause:

Under the above conditions, the Full backup set is altered with the latest Incremental or Differential backup. Hence, files and/or folders which existed in only the Full backup set are no longer able to be restored with the Full backup set.

Resolution:
This issue has been resolved with Hotfix 344584. See the related documents for download information.

Workaround:
Use a tape device as the backup destination device.
