Problem

When creating a Deduplication storage folder using certain characters at the beginning or end of a logon account password or username results in the message "An error occurred while creating a Deduplication storage folder."

Error Message

An error occurred while creating a Deduplication storage folder

Solution

There are the following limitations for the logon account password or username when creating a Deduplication storage folder.  The error above may occur when a restricted character is used.
  1. The password or username cannot be more than 63 characters
     
  2. Only ASCII printable characters can be used except the following limitations
     
    1. The following characters cannot be included in the password or username

      & (ampersand), " (quotation mark), < (lesser than), > (greater than), and ^ (caret)
       
    2. The following characters can be included in the password or username but cannot begin the password or username

      - (dash or hyphen)
       
    3. The following characters can be included in the password or username but cannot end the password or username

      \ (backslash)
       
    4. The following character should not be used in the password or username

      % (percent sign)

Possible Symptoms

The installation will fail and will not create a [Dedup_Folder]\log\pdde-config.log

The installation will fail with the following or similar error in the pdde-config.log

Tue 04/06/2010 14:11:57.21 executing  --initdb...
'--host' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Tue 04/06/2010 14:11:57.23 ERR:  --initdb failed: 9009

Other symptoms are possible.

Note: Before the Backup Exec 2010 R2 release the password for the deduplication folder cannot be more than 15 characters.  See TECH130606 for details.
