For Error 1:
A conflict between the Microsoft VSS and Dell Equalogic VSS provider can occur when Backup Exec requests a snapshot for the Exchange backup.
For Error 2:
AUTO SNAPSHOT Manager Present on the server.
Exchange 2007 Database and logs were on iSCSI Luns(Drives) on Dell Equallogic series Array.
All Dell Equallogic PS Series arrays come with a comprehensive software toolkit to facilitate the deployment, ongoing management, and protection of Dell Equallogic iSCSI SAN in your Microsoft Windows environments.
Auto-Snapshot Manager also provides simple snapshot integration with advanced third party backup applications by supporting VSS.
Solution for Error 1:
1. Please verify that the Exchange server has the Dell EqualLogic VSS Hardware provider installed by running 'vssadmin list providers' from a command prompt on the Exchange server.
a. If the Dell EqualLogic VSS Hardware Provider is listed, please proceed to step 2 below.
b. If the Dell EqualLogic VSS Hardware Provider is not found, chances are this solution will not help the issue, please use TECH58562 (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH58562) for further troubleshooting.
2. In the backup job properties for the Exchange backup, enable the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) and use the following settings;
-- "Microsoft volume shadow copy service"
-- Snapshot Provider: System - Use Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
This option forces Backup Exec to use the built-in System VSS writer from Microsoft during the backup. Re-run the backup with the above settings and the backup should successfully complete. Please use related the related material below if further troubleshooting is necessary.
Solution for Error 2:
-- All Writers are in stable State after checking using VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS
-- Its been observed that removing AUTO SNAPSHOT Manager (Dell Equallogic Host Integration Tool) from Windows Add & Remove Programs has resolved the issue. Users may install it on different server and restart the server if needed. Removing of AUTO SNAPSHOT Manager is likely to resolve the issue but completely user's discretion and must check with Dell prior, if anything else on the server is getting affected.
