Oracle database backups fail with RMAN error 06403 "Could not obtain a fully authorized session" and Oracle error ORA-01034 "ORACLE not available Recovery Manager complete"

Problem

Oracle database backups fail with RMAN error 06403 "Could not obtain a fully authorized session" and Oracle error ORA-01034 "ORACLE not available Recovery Manager complete"

Error Message

The exact error message in the Backup Exec job log is as follows:

RMAN-03002: failure of allocate command

RMAN-06403: could not obtain a fully authorized session

ORA-01034: ORACLE not available - Recovery Manager complete

Solution

Add the following Oracle control parameter to the Oracle configuration file listener.ora located on the Oracle server:

INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_listener_name = <timeout value in seconds>

Note: Once this setting is in place, it is necessary to restart the listener or the database to apply the changes. The INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT parameter also exists for Oracle configuration file SQLNET.ORA. It might be necessary to use the parameter in both places in order to overcome the problem.

Please consult the Oracle Database Net services Reference Guide for additional information and guidance for the chosen timeout value.

Applies To
