How to correct slow backup performance and agent initialization problems on fragmented Windows Server Hard Disk Partitions

Problem

How to correct slow backup performance and agent initialization problems on fragmented Windows Server Hard Disk Partitions.

Cause

Excessive drive fragmentation can adversely affect system performance, increase the amount of time it takes to run a backup, and cause Backup Exec (tm) agents, such as the Advanced Open File Option or Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) Feature, to potentially fail when a backup job is launched. It may also be observed that incremental backup performance is affected more severely than regular full or differential backup performance.

Solution

To check if the defragmentation is required  follow these steps:

1. Click on start and click on Run

2. Then type "Compmgmt.msc" and click on "Disk Defragmenter"

3. Select the drive to check and click on "Analyze" . If its required defragmentation it will show message

4.  To defragment a Windows Server Disk Partition with the built-in defrag utility, perform the following steps:

a. Double-click My Computer

b. Right-click on the hard disk partition and select Properties

c. Click on the Tools tab, and then click on Defragment Now (Figure 1)

    d. Select the drive partition that is to be defragmented, and then click Defragment (Figure 2)

      e. After the defragmentation is completed, click Check Now to check the partition for errors (Figure 3)

If the partition has excessive errors, a prompt will occur, which states that the drive must be scanned for errors prior to running the defragmentation utility.

NOTE:  Other third party disk defragmentation applications can also be used.
