This video is NetBackup 6.5 and 7.0 Exchange Agent User Backups – Copy Backup versus Truncating Logs 
Please note that for this demonstration, we will be using a master/media server running NetBackup 7.0.1 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2. Additionally, we will be using an Exchange 2003 client running NetBackup 7.0.1 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2 as well. The Exchange 2003 server is a stand-alone server.
The information in this video can also be applied to all supported versions of Exchange and subsequent versions of Windows under NetBackup 7.0, as well as NetBackup 6.5. This video also assumes prior knowledge of how to configure an Exchange backup in NetBackup.
A User backup is a backup that is initiated from the client. It requires that a policy exist for the given client, and contains a User schedule with an open window in which a User backup can be performed.
Please note that not all Exchange backup types will work properly when initiating the backup from the client to do a User backup. For example an Exchange 2007 CCR backup of the passive node cannot be done as a user backup.
A user initiated backup of Exchange is considered a copy backup by Microsoft. A copy backup is like a normal backup, except transaction logs are not truncated and future incremental backups ignore that the copy backup has been done. A copy backup can be used to get a full backup of a directory or Exchange Information Store without affecting transaction logs or what incremental backups will back up. For more information on copy backups please go to Microsoft's website.
The default behavior of a user backup is to act as a copy backup. However, this can be modified so that the user backup will behave as a normal backup. Exchange would then truncate the transaction logs after a successful user backup. To do this, first open the NetBackup client system's registry editor. Second, navigate to the registry key shown on the screen (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Agents\Exchange). Third, create a new DWORD value named Covert_USER_to_FULL and finally, assign that new DWORD a value of 1.
We will now demonstrate how to convert an existing policy to one that has a schedule for a user backup.
Under Policies in the NetBackup admin console, we have an existing Exchange 2003 database backup policy. We double-click on it, and click on the Schedules tab. We click the New button to bring up the Add New Schedule window. Under Name we will call the schedule "User" and under the Type of backup we will choose User Backup. We will leave the rest of the settings at their default and click on the Start Window tab. For this example, we will create an open window of 9:00am through 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. This means that a user could initiate the backup between the hours if 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday. We click OK to save the schedule, and OK again to save the policy changes.
Now we can go over to the client and open the Backup, Archive, and Restore (BAR) gui. We click on File then Specify NetBackup machines and policy type. If Exchange were running on a cluster, it would be necessary to change the Source Client setting to the Exchange server virtual host name. Since this is a stand-alone Exchange 2003 server, the machine name will be okay to use as the Source Client setting. The Policy type is not needed for a client initiated backup, so we click OK to save any changes.
We click on Select for backup to bring up a file selection to choose from for backup. Under the All folders pane on the left, we should see "Microsoft Information Store". If "Microsoft Information Store" were not present, we would need to make sure we are logged in as and running the BAR GUI as a Windows domain account with local administrator rights, as well as Exchange administrator rights. We click the checkbox next to "Microsoft Information Store" and then the first button on the left Start Backup of Marked Files. This brings up the Backup Files dialog, where we see settings for the backup server we are using, the file list we have chosen, and the optional keyword phrase. We will leave the settings at their default and click Start Backup. We see a prompt to view the progress of the backup, and click Yes which brings up the View Status window. 
On the master/media server, under Activity Monitor in the NetBackup admin console, we see a backup job has launched. When we double-click on the backup job, under the Job Overview tab, we see the Schedule type is User backup. 
And now we see the backup job has completed successfully, with a blue man and a status 0. The View Status window on the client also shows a successful backup.
Any final status other than 0 should be considered an unsuccessful Exchange backup and the cause should be investigated. Such a backup cannot be relied upon for a restore.
