Problem

Restoring a single .vmdk of a VM with multiple .vmdk's back to its original location.

Cause

When selecting a single .vmdk of a VM with multiple .vmdk's and the option "Delete existing virtual machine prior to restore" is not selected the restore job will fail with the following error message:

Final error: 0xe0009566 - The restore job cannot continue because the option to delete existing virtual machines prior to restore is not selected. Select this option on the restore job properties, and then run the job again.

If the option "Delete existing virtual machine prior to restore" is selected then as the text indicates the complete VM (all vmdk's) is being deleted prior of the actual data restore operation and only the one selected .vmdk will be restored. All non restored .vmdk's are now 0KB.

Solution

Restore the .vmdk locally to the Backup Exec server and import it into the virtual machine.
Alternatively, restore the entire virtual machine under a different name.
