Severity

High

Description

Backup Exec is unable to restore the Oracle database from the duplicate set that is created by scheduled duplicate job with 'Most Recent Full Backup' job option set as Source. You may see the duplicate Oracle backup sets in restore view, but it may not be restorable.

Veritas found the duplicate job does a incomplete copy of the primary Oracle set due internal errors. The resulting duplicate set has incomplete information and it may lead to restore failure. The duplicate backup job is incorrectly reported as successful in the job monitor/log and the problem may go unnoticed.

This product limitation applies only to the scheduled duplicate job of Oracle database(s) configured to use "Most Recent Full backup" job option as source.

This issue is applicable irrespective of Oracle version, Operating System, primary/secondary backup storage or the job schedule.

Error Message:

The restore job reports one of the below job log error(s):

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0001500 - The operation was terminated due a system error.
Final error category: Resource Errors

Or

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0001005 - Backup Exec encountered an unexpected error
Final error category: Resource Errors

Impacted Backup Exec Versions:  Backup Exec 15.FP4 (Onwards), Backup Exec 16.x and Backup Exec 20.x

Action Required

Workaround:

Veritas recommends customers to edit the scheduled duplicate job and choose either one of the duplicate job options:

  1. Change the source setting to "All backups" instead of "Most Recent Full".
  2. Duplicate Data immediately when source task completes.

Currently Veritas does not have a workaround to restore the Oracle database(s) from earlier duplicate sets.

Solution: This product issue is fixed in upcoming Backup Exec  20.4 release.
