Problem

SQL Restore fails randomly with Error - VxBSAEndData: 6

Error Message

DBClient Logs : -  CODBCaccess::LogODBCerr: DBMS MSG - ODBC return code <-x>, SQL State <01000>, SQL Message <3624><[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Location:     mediaRead.cpp:419 Expression:     !m_ActiveConsumptionList.IsEmpty () || !m_ActiveReads.IsEmpty () || !m_DecodeOutputQ.IsEmpty ()

Progress logs : - A system assertion check has failed. Check the SQL Server error log for details. Typically, an assertion failure is caused by a software bug or data corruption. To check for database corruption, consider running DBCC CHECKDB. If you agreed to send dumps to Microsoft during setup, a mini dump will be sent to Microsoft. An update might be available from Microsoft in the latest Service Pack or in a Hotfix from Technical Support.>

Cause

Assume that you restore a compressed backup in Microsoft SQL Server 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Occasionally, the restore operation may fail with the error above. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products and has a fix.

Solution

  1. Please install the appropriate cumulative update (CU) package on the SQL server. This will resolve the intermittent restore issue.
  2. The Cumulative update can be downloaded from the link below
