Problem

In NetBackup versions (8.0, 8.1, 8.1.1, 8.1.2, 8.1.2.1), the NDMP image operations such as backup, restore or verify can fail with "Status: 91 : fatal NB media database error" when the associated backup image is from an Accelerator NDMP backup.

Error Message

The NetBackup Job Details reports an ndmpagent error:

Info ndmpagent (pid=18060) done. Status: 91 : fatal NB media database error
Error bpbrm (pid=18057) client restore EXIT STATUS 91 : fatal NB media database error restored from image testhost_123456789; restore time: 0:00:05

Error ndmpagent (pid=18060) NDMP restore failed from path UNKNOWN
fatal NB media database error (91)

The bptm log shows:
<8> create_ndmp_frag_info: WARNING: Size of frags for image (2) is 8064598528, exceeded expected size = 8064598016
<8> create_ndmp_frag_info: WARNING: Setting image_size to expected size and ignoring this error

The ndmpagent log shows:
Error ndmpagent (pid=4808) <MEDIA-SERVERNAME>: DUMP: ERROR: stat on FILESYSTEM path /vol/test_vol/ failed. Error: No such file or directory
Error ndmpagent (pid=4808) <MEDIA-SERVERNAME>: DATA: Operation terminated: backup configuration failure (2) on RPC error: ERROR: BAD ENVOP (for /vol/test_vol/)
Error ndmpagent (pid=4808) NDMP backup failed, path = /vol/test_vol/

Cause

During the Accelerator backup for NDMP, when a bad backup selection ( missing unknown path ) is encountered, a bad object is inserted into the backup stream. However, on the media server this was incorrectly interpreted as the end of stream, which turns off further Accelerator processing, which leads to some incorrect data being recorded resulting with invalid backup images.

Solution

Veritas engineering are aware of the issue under Etrack 3966668, and a formal resolution has been made available with an Emergency Engineering Binary (EEB).

If this problem is experienced (NetBackup versions 8.0, 8.1, 8.1.1, 8.1.2, 8.1.2.1), please contact Veritas Technical Support to obtain the EEB, which will need applying on the NetBackup Media Server configured as the NDMP control host.
