Description

After you have upgraded to the 12.4 version of the Enterprise Vault server software, when you run the Start-EVDatabaseUpgrade cmdlet to upgrade the Enterprise Vault databases, the database upgrade process can take a long time. This happens if there are too many entries in the AuditTrail table in the Enterprise Vault audit database.

In Enterprise Vault 12.4, database indexes have been added on a few columns of the AuditTrail table to allow users to retrieve information from the Enterprise Vault auditing database using the OData web service. The SQL server may take a long time to add the indexes.

For 10 million rows, the database upgrade process takes approximately 2 minutes. For 1 billion rows, the process can take between 3 to 4 hours.
The AuditTrail table can have a maximum of 2 billion rows. In this case, the duration of the upgrade process may take up to 6 to 8 hours.

The duration of the database upgrade process also depends on any one or both of the following conditions:

  • The type of data in the database, whether xml or plain text. If the database has more xml entries than plain text items, then the upgrade will be slower.
  • The Enterprise Vault environment such as the hardware configuration, any network latency issues, and so on.
