Problem

After upgrading or installing Enterprise Vault (EV), the Enterprise Vault Directory Service reports an Event ID error 8591 with the following information: Error launching EvAzUtil utility in order to upgrade the roles-based administration database. Error code: '7'

Error Message

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Enterprise Vault
Event Category: Directory Service
Event ID: 8591
Description:
Error launching EvAzUtil utility in order to upgrade the roles-based administration database. Error code: '1'

V-437-8591

Cause

This can be caused by a missing or invalid copy of an EvAzStore_Inst.xml. This file contains all of the current Roles and Tasks for Authorization Manager and should be identical to EvAzStore_Ship.xml, which is created and updated when EV is installed or upgraded.

This article also applies for Error code 1 instead of 7

Solution

1. Copy a known good EvAzStore_Inst.xml file from the EV installation directory (typically c:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault) and then in the folder \InitialConfigurationData\EN\RBA on a working EV server running the same version of EV in the same Site.

Note: If one isn't available, copy EvAzStore_Ship.xml to EvAzStore_Inst.xml in the same directory. Doing such will set all Roles back to default, and reset all Roles and remove any members that were added to a Role.  It is recommended to record all custom user account role assignments prior to resetting this value.

2. From a command prompt at the root of the EV installation folder   (typically c:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault) , run:

EvAzUtil.exe -after "<EV Installation Folder>\InitialConfigurationData\EN\RBA\EvAzStore_Ship.xml" -updatedb

Note: Replace <EV Installation Folder> with the EV installation folder path.

3. Restart the Enterprise Vault Admin Service.
