Problem

Explanation of how basic disk staging works in NetBackup.

Solution

The basic disk staging is done in two stages:

Stage I:
The clients are backed up using a policy. In the policy disk is specified as the storage unit in the properties of change storage unit window. we also have a staging schedule button wherein we can specify the final destination storage unit, Final destination volume pool and final destination media owner. The final destination media owner is the media owner where the images would be stored after the relocation job copies them. We can also specify the schedule here according to the requirements.

Stage II:
Images are copied from the disk storage unit to the final destination storage unit. This is done using the disk staging schedule and this will determine when to copy the images from the disk storage unit to the final destination storage unit. After the images are copied from the disk to the tape storage unit space is freed up on the disk when it is needed. The images continue to exist on both the disk staging unit and final destination storage unit until the images expire and which is determine by the retention level specified in the policy or the value which is been setup in the high water mark and low water mark fields.

When the relocation schedule runs, NetBackup creates a data management job. The job looks for data that can be copied from the disk storage unit to the final destination storage unit. The job details window in the activity monitor show the disk staging activity in the job's data movement field. When NetBackup detects that the disk storage unit is full while running the backup job it pauses the backup, And deletes the oldest images on the disk storage unit which are already copied to the final destination unit.
