Problem

How to change the SMTP port number used for notifications in Veritas System Recovery to a different port number

Cause

By default, Veritas System Recovery (VSR) uses the standard SMTP port 25 when sending SMTP notifications.  Some mail servers have this SMTP port number altered from the default of 25, in this case, it is necessary for VSR to be configured to use this different port.

(Note: System Recovery cannot be configured to use SSL\TLS encryption through a specific port. Thus, some email servers such as GMAIL may reject the traffic. For a workaround with Gmail, click here: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/apps/mail-settings/oCwPE2o_oCM)

Solution

To change the SMTP port, first setup either SNMP or SMTP notifications in the software and restart the Veritas System Recovery service.  Without the notifications being setup first, the configuration file is not created.  Once the notification is enabled within VSR, the following procedure will allow the altering of the default SMTP port:

 1. Stop the System Recovery service
 2. In Notepad, edit the Backup Exec System Recovery.notify.xml located in the following location:

C:\ProgramData\veritas\veritas System Recovery

Note:  The ProgramData folder is a hidden folder.  Windows must be set to show hidden files and folders:
Go to Organize > Folder and Search Option
Click the View tab
Select Show hidden files and folders and click OK

 3. In the file find the following tags:

<ServerPort vt="23">25</ServerPort>            ←Change the value of 25 to whatever port number the SMTP server is set to use.

 4. Start the Veritas System Recovery service.
