Problem

Incremental backups of Enterprise Vault Databases fail with status 13 when using the NetBackup Enterprise Vault (EV) Agent

Error Message

2011/03/04 04:22:07 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=2848) from client evserver.symantec.com: ERR - Can't open object. Aborting backup: Enterprise Vault Resources:\EV Site (SYMC-EV-SITE (EVSERVER))\EV Server (EVSERVER)\EV Vault Store (VAULT PARTITION 1)\Vault Store DB (evserver/EVVAULTPARTITION1)\EVVAULTPARTITION1 (BEDS 0xE0000363: The Backup Exec SQL Agent was not used to create the last full, differential, or log backup of this database. You must use the SQL Agent to run a full backup before you can run a differential backup or transaction log backup.).

Cause

The differential-incremental backups of the Enterprise Vault databases are failing with status 13 due to a separate backup process (either an MS-SQL policy within NetBackup or an SQL Maintenance Plan within SQL) is backing up the databases and/or transaction logs.

With the NetBackup EV Agent, the full backups backup the databases and the diff-incremental backups backup and truncate the transaction logs.
Every record in the SQL Server transaction log is uniquely identified by a Log Sequence Number (LSN).
If the EV Agent runs a full backup of the database, the diff-incremental backups (transaction log backups) rely upon the LSN numbers to track the changes made since the last full backup.

If another backup process comes along and backs up the database and/or transaction logs, the LSN numbers are reset and can no longer be used to track the changes made since the last full backup by the EV Agent.
This results in the status 13 on the differential-incremental backups.

Solution

To resolve the issue, make sure that the only backups occurring for the Enterprise Vault databases and transaction logs are performed by the NetBackup EV Agent.
This means that any other process that performs backups of the Enterprise Vault databases (MS-SQL policy in NetBackup or SQL Maintenance Plans in SQL) will need to be discontinued.

The status 13 will continue to occur for the differential-incremental backups until another full backup has been run by the NetBackup EV Agent.

Applies To

NetBackup 7.0 or later
Enterprise Vault 7.5 or later
Full and differential-incremental backups being made using the NetBackup EV Agent

Only the differential-incremental backups of the Enterprise Vault Databases are failing with status 13.

NOTE! Since an Open Partition backup automatically backs up the associated Vault Store Database, the above is also true for differential-incremental backups of Open Partitions.
