Problem

After upgrading / installing NetBackup 8.0, the Java Console can connect, but an error is visible in the "Login Activity" indicator.

The error reads as follows:

Example:
User-added image

Note: there is no space between "130" and "System error occurred."

Other portions of the GUI also produce similar errors.  These include:
  • Media and Device Management > Credentials > WebSocket Servers
  • Security Management > Security Events
  • Security Management > Certificate Management
  • Security Management > Certificate Management > Token Management

Notice the 13th character in the string "https://jdhv2_2012R2_3:1556/netbackup/loginwithbpjavasessiontoken" is an underscore ("_").

Cause

This issue occurs because the hostname of the server to which the NetBackup Java Console connects contains underscores.  The underscore is not supported by various language libraries in the JDK (Java Development Kit) as a valid character in a hostname.

There is a new Service in NetBackup 8.0, NetBackup Web Management Console, which relies on these new language libraries.

Solution

Starting in NetBackup 8.0, the NetBackup Java Administration Console is no longer able to function properly when the specified hostname contains an underscore character.

This issue is noted for 8.0. For 8.1 we have made updates that may allow hostnames with underscores to resolve properly. Underscores are not supported and have not been tested, so it is recommended to not use underscores in hostnames.

Please ensure all NetBackup hostnames comply with RFC-1123.

Workaround
In the event you encounter this issue upon upgrading to NetBackup 8.0, it may be possible to use the console without error by supplying the IP Address of the problematic host in the "Host name" field on the log in screen.
