NetBackup VMware backups may remove existing snapshots

If a NetBackup master server is at version 7.7.2 or 7.7.3 and a backup policy uses the default snapshot handling option (Abort if NetBackup snapshot(s) exist) targeted to a NetBackup 7.7.1 or earlier backup host, all pre-existing snapshots are deleted during the backup.

Error Message

The bpfis log file shows that snapshots are deleted, as shown in the following example:

The default snapshot handling option performs the incorrect action of removing existing snapshots rather than the correct action of aborting if a snapshot that was created by NetBackup exists.


The following are the available solutions:

  • The recommended solution is to upgrade the entire environment to NetBackup 8.0 or above, where this issue is fully mitigated.

  • Change the existing snapshot handling option on the affected backup policies from the default to any of the other options.

  • If you have backup hosts that run NetBackup 7.7.2 or later, change the backup policies that use the default snapshot handling option so they use a NetBackup 7.7.2 or later backup host.

  • Upgrade the backup hosts to NetBackup 7.7.2 or later.
  • Apply an EEB that fixes the issue. Contact your Veritas Support Representative to obtain the EEB for your NetBackup release.  Use the appropriate tracking number when you request the EEB, as follows:
    • NetBackup 7.7.2: ET3904028

    • NetBackup 7.7.3: ET3902757

Beginning with NetBackup 8.0, NetBackup does not delete all existing snapshots when the default snapshot handling option is selected.  If the backup job runs on a media server or VMware backup host that has a NetBackup version earlier than 7.7.2, NetBackup fails the backup job.

Veritas strongly recommends the following best practices:
1. Always perform a full DR backup prior to making any changes to your environment.
2. Always make sure that your environment is running the latest version and patch level.
3. Perform periodic "test" restores.
