Problem

Upgrading the Volume Manager component (VxVM) of Storage Foundation 6.2.1, or InfoScale 7.1, to releases that support Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) boot mode may cause several problems. UEFI enables the GRUB2 boot loader.

Examples of upgrade paths that may be affected by this issue:
  • Upgrading from 7.1.0.000 to 7.1.0.002
  • Upgrading from 6.2.1.015 to 6.2.1.016

Error Message

File missing or empty: /boot/grub/menu.lst ls: cannot access /etc/vx/lib/discovery.d/*.so*

VxVM ERROR V-5-2-6418 File missing or empty: /boot/grub2/grub.cfg on RHEL7
File missing or empty: /boot/grub/menu.lst on RHEL6

Solution

Veritas is aware of three potential issues:

Problem 1

On Linux, the VxVM package upgrade reports the following errors:
'ERROR "V-5-2-6418 File missing or empty: /boot/grub2/grub.cfg s: cannot access /etc/vx/lib/discovery.d/*.so*"'
or
'File missing or empty: /boot/grub/menu.lst ls: cannot access /etc/vx/lib/discovery.d/*.so*'

Error Message:
VxVM ERROR V-5-2-6418 File missing or empty: /boot/grub2/grub.cfg on RHEL7
File missing or empty: /boot/grub/menu.lst on RHEL6

Cause:
The configuration file that is sourced, or included, in the vxstart_vvr script has an issue that is fixed by hot fix VxVM 7.1.0.001. This affects packages that are upgraded from earlier versions. If the hot fix rpm is installed directly (no upgrade) the issues is not observed.

Workaround:
The problem does not have any functionality impact and the errors can be ignored.

Problem 2

Auto mount failing with VxVM volumes on RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 7.2

Symptom:
Auto mount failing with VxVM volumes on RHEL 7.2 after system reboot.

Workaround:
This is a known issue. Refer to the workaround steps in the following article:

Post InfoScale 7.0.1 upgrade VxFS filesystems listed in fstab fail to automatically mount during boot.
https://www.veritas.com/docs/000109317

# cp -f /etc/vx/systemd/vxvm-fstab-automount.service   /usr/lib/systemd/system/vxvm-fstab-automount.service
# systemctl enable vxvm-fstab-automount.service

Problem 3

On RHEL 7, the VxVM package uninstallation throws 'ERROR "Failed to stop vxvm-fstab-automount.service: Unit vxvm-fstab-automount.service not loaded'

Error Message:
Failed to stop vxvm-fstab-automount.service: Unit vxvm-fstab-automount.service not loaded

Workaround:
This error is related to Problem 2. The errors can be ignored during the package uninstallation.
