Problem

During a GRT-enabled backup job of VMware resources in a vSphere 6 environment, the error "V-225-278: Unable to remove VMware Tools VSS feature" may appear if the VMware Tools installation was upgraded from a pre-release version to the final vSphere 6 version.

Error Message

V-225-278: Unable to remove VMware Tools VSS feature.

Cause

In a vSphere 6 environment, the Backup Exec Agent for Windows installation is unable to remove the VMware VSS Provider if the VMware Tools installation was upgraded from a pre-release version to the final vSphere 6 version. This leaves both the VMware VSS Provider and the Veritas VSS Provider installed on the virtual machine, and can cause the exception during GRT-enabled backups. VMware does not support upgrading VMware Tools from a pre-release version to the final version.

Solution

Uninstall the VMware Tools and the Backup Exec Agent for Windows from the virtual machine, then reinstall the VMware Tools and then the Backup Exec Agent for Windows.
