Problem

During a NetBackup (NBU) Catalog Recovery, the process fails with a status 2850 in the job details. This error was seen during the restore of the NBDB database files, but could also occur at a different point.

Error Message

In reviewing a "verbose 5" admin log, the errors below are seen:

The error above points to an error occurring in bprd due to the function call get_bprdESwto(). The bprd log then showed several errors looking up an unknown media server name:

13:04:54.649 [4720.2168] <16> emmlib_GetHost: (0) QueryMachine failed, emmError = 2000000, nbError = 0
13:04:54.649 [4720.2168] <16> get_media_server_version: emmlib_GetHost(CEMM_NBU_MEDIA) failed: 2000000
13:04:54.649 [4720.2168] <2> emmlib_GetHost: (-) MachineName <cdcvrts01> Machine type <7>

13:04:54.665 [4720.2168] <16> emmlib_GetHost: (0) QueryMachine failed, emmError = 2000000, nbError = 0

And then the bprd PID returns a 254 error creating the MPX group:

13:04:54.665 [4720.2168] <4> emmlib_uninitialize: (0) Successfully released EMM session and database objects
13:04:54.665 [4720.2168] <2> start_mpx_group: cannot get version of media server cdcvrts01 from db
13:04:54.665 [4720.2168] <2> start_indep_grp: (pid 114) start_mpx_group returned 254
13:04:54.665 [4720.2168] <2> wait_for_new_restore_msg: Wait up to 120 seconds for new restore msg

The status 254 is then translated to a 2850:

13:04:54.665 [3320.3792] <2> mail_msg_and_set_exit_status: CLIENT_CMD_SOCK from bpcr = 620
13:04:54.665 [3320.3792] <2> mail_msg_and_set_exit_status: CLIENT_STAT_SOCK from bpcr = 652

13:04:54.665 [3320.3792] <2> bpcr_get_version_rqst: bpcd version: 07500000
13:04:54.696 [3320.3792] <2> bpcr_get_version_rqst: bpcd version: 07500000
13:04:54.711 [3320.3792] <2> mail_msg_and_set_exit_status: RESTORE EXIT STATUS = 2850

Cause

The DR site's EMM database contained a foreign_media entry for host cdcvrts01. This host was associated with the media required for the catalog restore.

Solution

Per 000040509, an entry to MEDIA_HOST_OVERRIDE directed NBU to use another media server to perform the restore successfully.

Applies To

Error was seen during an NBU 7.5.X disaster recovery (DR) exercise, but could affect other NBU versions as well.
