Incremental backup of Exchange server fails with the error "0xe000035e" whenever a VDR (VMWare Data Recovery) backup is performed between the full and incremental backup

Problem

Incremental backup of Exchange server fails with the error "0xe000035e" whenever a VDR (VMWare Data Recovery) backup is performed between the full and incremental backup.
Incremental backup is successful if no VDR backup is performed between full and incremental.

Note: This error can be caused with combinations of any version of Exchange Server and Backup Exec.

Error Message

V-79-57344-862 - 0xe000035e - The Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange was not used to create the last full backup of this database. You must use the Exchange Agent to run a full backup before you run a differential or incremental backup.

-515 The timestamp in the next log does not match the expected timestamp.

Cause

VDR backup modifies tracking records of the Exchange database, and overwrites that way the tracking records set by Backup Exec full backup. Therefore, the original BE tracking records are not available anymore for the incremental backup with Backup Exec.

Solution

1)  Perform only full backups with Backup Exec

2)  Perform backups of the Exchange server (or any other database which uses VSS  technology) only with one backup product (BE  or VDR)
