Problem

When SAN switch FC port got some hardware issue, you could see SCSI errors but no dmp path errors.

Error Message

2011 Nov 26 01:56:19 sys01 kernel: sd 3:0:5:33: SCSI error: return code = 0x00070000
2011 Nov 26 01:56:19 sys01 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdnn, sector 28633576736

Cause

One or more FC ports are not stable which lead to CRC or Decode errors.

Solution

The error number 0x0007000 is composed by message-part (00) and host-part (07). The message-part implies the path is OK, and the host-part implies this path is not stable.  DMP regards this path as BUSY or TRANSIENT error and will retry the I/O request upon this path. DMP then resends the I/O request for several times (not indefinitely), normally the I/O request will succeed at some a retry. If all the retries failed, DMP will record “… disabled path XXX belonging to the dmpnode XXX” error message in the dmp log files. If no such error messages around the SCSI error, then the I/O request succeeds by retrying.
