VCS ERROR V-16-10051-3032 Lanman:-Lanman:online:Attempt to online the Lanman resource has failed. error_type:2, error_code:0x00000842

Problem

For Veritas Cluster Server (VCS), an attempt to online the Lanman resource fails.

Error Message

The following event is logged into the Windows Application Event Log

Lanman:<Lanman_resname>:online:Failed to register Virtual server name to Netbios (error_type:2, error_code:0x00000842)  

The Lanman_A.log at %VCS_HOME%log will report the error below:

VCS ERROR V-16-10051-3032 Lanman:<Lanman_resname>:online:Attempt to online the Lanman resource has failed. error_type:2, error_code:0x00000842

Cause

Error: 0x00000842 translates to NERR_ServerNotStarted

This refers to the Server Service

The Server service supports file, print, and named-pipe sharing over the network.

If this service is stopped, these functions will be unavailable.

The Lanman depends on the Server service and hence, will fail to online if this service is not in Running state. 

Solution

1) For the Server service entry in Services (services.msc), ensure the Startup Type is set to Automatic.  If the Server service is not Running, then start it.

2) Attempt to online the Lanman resource in VCS.
