Veritas beats competitors by hours

An industry leader in technology benchmarking, Principled Technologies performed hands-on tests of enterprise backup and recovery solutions in real-world scenarios focused on large-scale virtual machine (VM) environments using VMware.

Hypervisor-level backups, array-based backups (hardware snapshots) and granular recovery backups were tested on groups of 100 to 1,000 VMs. Results show why NetBackup is a king of scale.

NetBackup was more than 11 hours faster than CommVault, and 3 times faster than EMC, and Veeam for hypervisor-level backups on 1,000 virtual machines.

NetBackup enabled granular recovery backups with a single pass, and was 3.2 times faster than CommVault, and 1.7 times faster than EMC.

In real-world scenarios, Principled Technologies tested Veritas NetBackup versus CommVault. NetBackup outperformed CommVault in speed and scalability, improving in efficiency with larger groups of VMs. The larger the data center, the more time and money NetBackup saves enterprises.

For SAN hypervisor-level backup, NetBackup completed a 1,000 VM backup 9 hours faster. Using VADP, NetBackup was at least 5 times faster than CommVault.

NetBackup used NetApp array-based snapshots to create recovery points. At 100 VMs, NetBackup was three times faster than CommVault. At 1,000 VMs, it was 15 times faster — proving that NetBackup efficiently scales with larger data centers.

NetBackup created backup images that offered granular recovery three times faster and with simpler steps than CommVault for an SQL server.

For SAN hypervisor-level backup NetBackup completed a 1,000 VM backup in 66.8% less time than EMC. Using VADP, NetBackup was at least 3 times faster than EMC in all areas tested.

NetBackup used NetApp array-based snapshots to create recovery points. The EMC solution tested did not provide a similar feature.NetBackup protected 1,000 VMs in less than 9 minutes.

NetBackup created backup images that offered granular recovery 1.7 times faster and with fewer steps than EMC for an SQL server.

In real-world scenarios, Principled Technologies tested Veritas NetBackup versus Veeam. NetBackup outperformed EMC in speed and scalability, improving in efficiency with larger groups of VMs. The larger the data center, the more time and money NetBackup saves enterprises.

For SAN hypervisor-level backup NetBackup completed a 1,000 VM backup in 67.3% less time than Veeam. Using VADP, NetBackup was at least 3 times faster than Veeam in all areas tested.

NetBackup used NetApp array-based snapshots to create recovery points. Veeam’s took twice the amount of time as NetBackup to protect 1,000 VMs. For the application-consistent backup NetBackup protected 1,000 VMs in 38 minutes while Veeam failed to complete backups for any test higher than 300 VMs.
