The Tests
SAN hypervisor-level backup:
SAN hypervisor-level backup is a commonly used method of protecting VMs that utilizes vStorage API for Data Protection (VADP). Principled Technologies tested the time required to perform full backups through hypervisor-level backups. Multiple tests conducted on groups of 100, 200, 400 and 1,000 VMware VMs highlighted the effects of scale on performance.
NAS storage-array snapshot backup:
NAS storage-array snapshot backups are a growing trend, used by enterprises with aggressive RTOs to shorten recovery windows. Principled Technologies created crash-consistent backups of NAS-based NFS storage for 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 VMware VMs, plus a 1,000 VM application-consistent backup.
Granular recovery backup:
Granular recovery allows a single application file to be recovered without recreating an entire VM, saving time and resources. Principled Technologies tested the specific steps and time required for creating a backup image that enables a granular restore for a SQL VM.
