Problem

Non mail items such as Calender items, Notes, and Posts delay archiving when the IgnoreEVDates registry value is set to 1 or 3.

Cause

In Enterprise Vault 10.0.4 non-shortcut items are now eligible for re-archiving with the IgnoreEVDates registry value set. ( http://www.veritas.com/docs/000085223)  These non-shortcut items include, but are not limited to:
Calendar appointments ( IPM.Appointment)
Contacts ( IPM.Contact)
Meeting requests, responses, and cancelations ( IPM.Schedule.Meeting.XXX)
Tasks ( IPM.Task)
Sticky Notes ( IPM.StickyNote)
Draft items

When the registry value IgnoreEVDates is in place with a value of 1 or 3 non-shortcut items are processed on each pass of an eligible mailbox.  If the number of older eligible non-shortcut items is at or above the number of items per target per pass, default value of one thousand, then it is likely that more recent eligible mail items will not be archived.  This behavior causes an increase in the size of the Mailbox, due to more recent eligible items not being archived; in addition the number and size of deleted items in each Mailbox will rise after each archiving run.

For example a Mailbox has ~24,000 items that add up to ~500 MB in size, this Mailbox has 500 non-shortcut items that are being re-archived every archiving run.  After several weeks the number of items in the Mailbox stayed steady at ~24,000 with ~500 MB, however the number of DeletedItems steadily increased and grew to ~1,250,000 items with a DeletedItemSize of 13.3 GB.  Each Enterprise Vault Archiving run causes excessive Exchange Mailbox Database growth.

Workaround

The  IgnoreEVDates registry value should only be in place for a specific reason this registry value should be set to 0 or deleted upon return to normal scheduled archiving, for details of this registry value see the related article:
How to Force archiving based on the Received Date of email after restoring messages from the archive http://www.veritas.com/docs/000040806
In addition the non-shortuct Message Classes can be un-checked from the Exchange Mailbox Archiving policy.

Solution

This issue has been addressed in the following release:
Enterprise Vault 12
https://www.veritas.com/docs/000099905

Note: For information on how to obtain Enterprise Vault 12 see: How to obtain the license key and installation download for Veritas products

After upgrading to Enterprise Vault 12  IgnoreEVDates is paired with a new registry value  IgnoreEVDatesEnd:
IgnoreEVDates
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Agents
DWORD
0 — Off
1 — Ignore Archived date
2 — Ignore Restored date
3 — Ignore both Archived and Restored date

Controls whether the Archived date and Restored date properties of items are ignored when archiving.

The IgnoreEVDatesEnd registry value must also be set to specify the latest date to be ignored. Items archived on or before that date will be treated as though they had never been archived or restored.

IgnoreEVDatesEnd
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Agents

String value containing a UTC date and time in the following ISO 8601 format: yyyyMMddThh:mm:ssZ

Sets the date that the IgnoreEVDates registry value uses as the latest Archived or Restored date.

Note: After you set these values, use Run Now to run the archiving task, and then set the value of IgnoreEVDates to 0 or remove it to resume normal archiving.
