When using 128-bit AES software encryption, Simplified Disaster Recovery (SDR) unable to restore data

Problem

When using 128-bit AES software encryption during Backups, Simplified Disaster Recovery (SDR) completes immediately without displaying "Restoring Data" screen (Figure 1) and no data is restored.

Error Message

The following message is observed in the debug log (BEDRWIZ_000.log)

[0944]  Restoring C:
[0944] : Adding device [C:] to AddRestoreFSE()
[0944] : Set is encrypted.
[0944]: ERROR: Bad pass phrase.

 

Solution

A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Articles to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.

This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 21.4

 

Workaround:

For urgent recovery, use Manual DR.

For future recovery, change the encryption type to 256-bit AES (SHA-2) or 256-bit AES (PBKDF2.)
