Problem

Storage Foundation High Availability Solutions 6.0.1 fails to install on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP2 with Kernel updates beyond 3.0.13-0.27.1 such as 3.0.26-0.7.6, 3.0.31-0.9, 3.0.38-0.5.1 or later. SUSE released multiple kernel updates after the SLES 11 SP2 base release to address some critical issues. Customers using these more recent kernel versions on SLES 11 SP2 will experience errors in the installation of Storage Foundation and High Availability Solutions 6.0.1

Cause

This issue is due to SLES 11 SP2 kernel maintenance updates changing the third number of the kernel version, as opposed to update of the fourth with SLES 11 and SLES 11 SP1 releases. With SLES 11 SP2, the base kernel is shifted from a 2.6 kernel version to a 3.0 kernel version and 3.0 kernel versions have three numbers, whereas 2.6 kernel versions have four numbers.

Solution

Veritas has fixed this problem in patch 6.0.100.100 (Public hotfix 1) for SFHA 6.0.1, which will correctly account for updates to third number in the kernel version.

This patch is available from the SORT portal (see link below):

https://sort.Veritas.com/patch/detail/6732

This patch must be installed if you are using SFHA 6.0.1 on SLES11SP2 with an updated kernel mentioned above.

Below are the installation instructions to apply the fix.

(A)      Fresh Install of SFCFSHA stack on system with SLES11_SP2 OS with new Kernel (newer than SLES11SP2 base kernel )

  • Install the SFHA/SFCFS 6.0.1 (installsf/ installsfcfsha/ installsfrac/ installsfsybasece/ installsfha)
    • ----> It gives message that the installation for VRTSvxvm and VRTSvxfs has failed.
  • Download and extract the patch
  • Change directory to that of the patch
  • Upgrade following packages
    • VRTSvxvm
    • VRTSgms
    • VRTSglm
    • VRTSodm
    • VRTSvxfs
  • Command to upgrade these pkgs
    • #rpm -Uvh VRTSvxfs-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSodm-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSgms-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSglm-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSvxvm-6.0.100.100-GA_SLES11.x86_64.rpm
  • Change directory to “/opt/VRTS/install/”
  • Configure stack using ‘–configure’ to install script present in directory “/opt/VRTS/install/”

(B)     SFCFSHA stack installed and configured on SLES11_SP2 GA kernel version. Now want to update OS kernel to new version.

  • Stop cluster node properly using steps given in installation guide.
  • Download and extract the patch
  • Change directory to that of the patch
  • Upgrade following packages
    • VRTSvxvm
    • VRTSgms
    • VRTSglm
    • VRTSodm
    • VRTSvxfs
  • Command to upgrade these pkgs
    • #rpm -Uvh VRTSvxfs-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSodm-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSgms-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSglm-6.0.100.100-SLES11.x86_64.rpm VRTSvxvm-6.0.100.100-GA_SLES11.x86_64.rpm
