Solution

The indicated symptom can be encountered either during a Sybase database instance backup or restore, as both operations are invoked through the isql utility. The error will be reported in the stdout file for the script invoking isql . The message indicates that the utility cannot successfully connect to the database instance.

This could be either because you have made an error in the command line arguments or because the Sybase administrator does not have the Sybase instance properly configured and in the correct state.

In the first case,
  • Check that the '-S <server_name>' argument specifies the correct dataserver name for the Sybase instance to be backed up or restored
  • Check that the '-U <user_id>' and '-P <password>' arguments specify a valid login for that Sybase instance

In the second case,
  • Have the Sybase administrator check that the dataserver specified by the '-S' argument is currently running and in a proper state for backup or restore
  • Have the Sybase administrator verify that the contents of the interface file for the dataserver are correct

Once the isql utility can successfully connect to the instance, then the appropriate dump or load command can be issued to affect the backup or restore.
