Problem

Tape devices offline on a windows 2008 R2 SP1 and Windows 2012 Backup Exec Server after updating to 21.2

Error Message

  • Tape Drive goes offline.
  • Installation of the tape device drivers appears to be successful, but the drivers are not installed, a yellow exclamation shows in the Windows Device Manager, the driver provider remains either unknown or Microsoft, and code 39 is logged in the 'driver' tab in the tape device properties window.
  • More recently the following message is visible: "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)”.

Solution

This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 21.2 R2

Workaround:

Perform either A) or B)

A)

  1. Open Command Prompt ( Run as Administrator )

  2. Go to <Backup Exec install folder>\TPFilter
    Default path:
    C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\TPFilter

  3. Run the following command

    C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\TPFilter>tpfilter remove
    TpFilter is currently installed.

  4. Reboot the server

 

B)

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
 
  1. Go to the following path in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6D807884-7D21-11CF-801C-08002BE10318} 

  2. In the right hand pane for class make sure it states 'Tape drive'.

  3. In the right hand pane look for upper filter and lower filter, right click on them one by one, and delete them.

  4. If a Tape Library is being used, also go to the following path in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{CE5939AE-EBDE-11D0-B181-0000F8753EC4}

  5. In the right hand pane for class make sure it states 'MediumChanger'.

  6. In the right hand pane look for upper filter and lower filter, right click on them one by one, and delete them.

  7. Reboot the server.  

  8. Confirm the device drivers have installed properly by checking the properties on the tape drive once again in the Windows Device Manager. 
    Note: The Changer should remain as 'Unknown Medium Changer' and use Microsoft drivers.
